SERVICE Above Self Award
GIVEN TO 4 LOCAL STUDENTS!
Every year the Southport Evening Rotary Club honors students in Brunswick County who are continually putting the needs of others above their own needs. These students and their actions exemplify the Rotary International motto “Service Above Self”. The Southport Evening Club honors one student from the 5th Grade at Southport Elementary School, the 8th Grade at South Brunswick Middle School, and a Senior from South Brunswick High School with a certificate and monetary award. The teachers and staff at these schools nominate and select the award recipients. This Service Above Self Award is not intended for the most academic, most athletic, most artistic, or most musical student. This award is intended for the most caring student, the student who always offers to help without asking anything in return, and the student who always carries a positive attitude and shares this positivity with others. For the 2019-2020 school year, the Southport Evening Rotary Club would like to congratulate these students on winning the Service Above Self Award: Kenneth Blake Herring who is a graduating 5th grader from SES, both Eliel Flores Lopez and Kileigh Caton who are graduating 8th graders from SBMS, and Anhelys Barajas-Rivera who is a graduating Senior from SBHS. All recipients of the Service Above Self Award receive certificates, gift cards for the SES & SBMS students, and scholarship money for the SBHS graduating senior.
BUILDING BETTER FUTURES is our club's theme. We want to enhance and enrich students in the pursuit of their dreams. Our projects are very diverse in nature, from STEM-related activities such as sponsoring and coaching the South Brunswick Middle School Robotics Team, to mentoring middle school students about the careers available to them without a four-year college degree. We have a close relationship with the middle and high schools teachers and work with them as partners to help guide them in future career choices.
OUR VISION IS TO STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITY BY HELPING STUDENTS REALIZE CAREERS PREVIOUSLY UNCONSIDERED, TO EXPAND THEIR POSSIBILITIES BY BRINGING COMMUNITY PROFESSIONALS DIRECTLY TO THEM AND TO MENTOR AND GUIDE THEM TOWARD SMART, ADAPTABLE CHOICES.
The Southport Rotary Evening Club has something for everyone's interest in helping others as our motto, "Service Above Self," defines us.
